They found that there are nine parts of an individual’s genetic code that may play a part in determining sexual orientation. The study also suggests that some men are not born gay, but are influenced by epigenetic changes triggered by environmental factors such as stress, chemical exposure and childhood abuse raising the question of nature vs nurture. In a surprising new study, researchers from the University of California compared the DNA of 47 sets of male twins, where at least one of the twins was gay.Dr Ngun, the research team leader, said: “Sexual attraction is such a fundamental part of life, but it’s not something we know a lot about at the genetic and molecular level. I hope that this research helps us understand ourselves better and why we are the way we are.”
They now claim that they can guess whether a man is straight or gay with up to 70% accuracy.
Please don’t start swapping your gaydar for saliva swabs though.British Professor Tim Spector, of King’s College London, was sceptical, saying: “Epigenetic differences are one obvious reason and this study provides evidence for this. However the small study needs replicating before any talk of prediction is realistic.”
