Bloggers Elizabeth and Tom Boyce share a marital bed with with Zach, 11, Izzy, nine, Ben, seven, Owen, three, and baby Elijah, one, in a custom-built "family bed".An American couple claim that having five of their children sleep with them has boosted their sex life.People are understandably fascinated with what it's like to have seven people sleeping in the same space - and it's raised many questions relating to how the adults manage to maintain intimacy while participating in such an extreme version of co-sleeping.
While bundling everyone in to the same space is normal for them, a post on their website Wandering the World Below has gotten the internet talking.Elizabeth who claims to wear the same pair of sandals every day of the year - revealed that after sharing a picture of their bedtime set-up she had been inundated with questions - mostly about her sex life. She wrote: "Sex doesn't have to happen in a bed."There are plenty of 16 year olds who ended up in the back seat of a car to prove that!"I think what it boils down to is your lack of imagination. I am sure you can figure it out.But it wasn't because her and Tom wanted the freedom to romp around the house that saw them decide to have the whole family sleep together, it was because managing the needs of the whole family was so exhausting. She said: "We just needed sleep. Tom is disabled and is often sick or needs care at night. I was up helping him, nursing a baby, putting kids back into their own beds, soothing a toddler woken by other kids... it was a mess!."In our house, by moving everyone into one room, we suddenly had several other rooms that were completely empty at night and we no longer had small children wandering, crying into our bed in the dark." When we moved everyone together, the toddler got a dark little cave to sleep in. Our anxious, insomniac 11 yr old had a dark little cave to sleep in. Our wild sleepers each had their own space and I was still by Tom to help him if he needed it.Getting everyone used to the scenario wasn't too much of a struggle, as the family regularly go on road trips in a camper van and share single hotel rooms when on the road.Elizabeth added that her home's now empty two bedrooms are used for storing Lego and clothes - their eldest child, 21, has moved out.
