South Korea is a key U.S. ally. About 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea as a deterrence against North Korea. The meeting will be the latest in a series of summits between regional leaders.Last month, Park met with her Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Beijing, followed by a summit between Obama and Xi in Washington.South Korea, China and Japan are also scheduled to hold trilateral summit talks at the end of the month or the start of next month.A trilateral summit has not been held since May 2012 due to tensions mainly over Japan's attempts to whitewash its wartime atrocities and colonial occupation. Japan ruled the Korean Peninsula as a colony from 1910-45 and controlled much of China in the early part of the 20th century.Separately, more than 160 South Korean business leaders plan to accompany Park to try to explore business opportunities with their U.S. counterparts.

The country has claimed it has the world's most advantageous human rights conditions and policies.
Park also said South Korea will further strengthen cooperation with Germany over potential unification between South and North Korea, noting the German experience of unification can be a valuable lesson to South Korea.Park believes that peaceful unification is the fundamental solution to resolve the standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons program. She has called unification a "bonanza" for South Korea as well as a blessing for neighboring countries.Gauck said he is pleased that South Korea and Germany exchange opinions on the issue of unification.North Korea has long suspected that Seoul could be plotting to absorb Pyongyang, a claim denied by South Korea. The Korean Peninsula was divided into the capitalistic South and communist North after liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule. The two sides then fought in the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. In an address to the National Assembly, Gauck said he supports Park's initiative to boost cooperation on soft issues in the region. The initiative is designed to promote peace by building trust in a step-by-step manner. It calls for countries in the region to start with softer, nonpolitical issues, such as environmental issues and disaster relief, to foster trust before expanding cooperation to tackling serious political and security matters.Park is also pushing for similar step-by-step measures to build trust between the two Koreas."Trust and dialogue is the key to peaceful changes and understanding," Gauck said, adding South Korea and other countries should work for a policy change in North Korea. Also Monday, state-run Korea Electronics Technology Institute and BMW, a German luxury car brand, signed a memorandum of understanding calling for cooperation in automobile and information and technology.Trade volume between South Korea and Germany stood at US$28.9 billion in 2014, up 36 percent from 2009.
CREDIT
