The Enugu State Government has moved to check the proliferation of baby factories in the state by setting up a committee on child adoption. Over the years, several baby factories, where young mothers give birth and, most often, sell their babies, have been discovered in the state, as well as other parts of the South East.<br /> <br />  The Committee on Child Adoption, which is to address all prevalent illegalities in child fostering and adoption, is headed by the Archbishop of the Enugu Anglican Province and Bishop of Enugu, Most Reverend Emmanuel Chukwuma. Inuagurating the committee at the Government House, Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, warned that his administration would not fold its hands to watch rules and laws on child adoption abused in the state.<br /> <br />  Ugwuanyi expressed regrets that, despite existing laws and the best efforts of government and other concerned agencies, cases of illegal child adoption and fostering have continued to rise. He described the prevailing situation, where children are often abandoned, or sold as commodities, as unacceptable. <br /> <br /> According to him, the establishment and operation of illegal child adoption facilities was a major cause for concern. Ugwuanyi admitted that prevailing child adoption practices were not in line with constitutional provisions.<br /> <br />  “While we acknowledge the right and the necessity for the childless, or benevolent couples to adopt motherless children and orphans, we believe that there is need for strict compliance with due process and the provisions of relevant laws to guarantee the security and well being of the affected children.

A Four-Month-Old Baby Boy Stolen by Uchenna For Selling.

According to the police boss, Uchenna and four other suspects, still on the run, stole the boy at gun point on August 21 at Ntigha Uzo in Obingwa Local Government Area of the state, and handed him over to the girlfriend to sell.<br /> <div> <br /></div> The Abia State Police Command has declared a manhunt for one Uchenna (surname unknown), for allegedly stealing a four-month-old baby boy who he gave to his girlfriend, Kelechi Uche, to sell. Police Commissioner, Joshak Habila, who paraded the Kelechi in Umuahia, said she was arrested by members of the public at Osusu Aku where she was looking for buyers.<br /> <br />   He said Kelechi drew the suspicion of some eagle-eyed members of the public who spotted her on August 26 with a baby who was crying uncontrollably but she could not breastfeed him. The CP said she was arrested by the curious members of the public following her incoherent and unsatisfactory answer when she was asked if she was the biological mother of the baby.<br /> <br />  “Because of the suspicion, she was immediately arrested and handed over to the police at Ugwunagbo Division for further questioning,” the CP said. He added that upon interrogation, “the suspect revealed that the child was stolen by her boy friend, Uchenna, and four others and given to her to sell.”<br /> <br />  The CP said the suspect also revealed that the baby was first kept in the house of one Mrs. Love Chinkata , also on the run, before she collected him to sell. Police said efforts were on to trace the biological parents of the baby and to also apprehend other fleeing suspects in connection with the crime.
