Woman Who Gave Buhari N1m Savings, has been abandoned

The All Progressives Congress has denied reports in a section of the media that Haj. Maitalle Tara Koko, the 92-year-old woman who is an ardent Muhammadu Buhari supporter, has been abandoned, saying the woman is being well catered for.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the wife of the Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Zainab S-Bagugu, a medical doctor, has personally taken charge of Haj Maitalle’s welfare.

It said since the woman suffered a mild stroke while returning from Abuja where she witnessed the swearing-in of President Buhari (at the instance of the Kebbi State Governor and the Senator from Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero), she was admitted and treated at the Sir Yahaya General Hospital in Birnin Kebbi, and all her expenses paid by the Governor and his wife, who ensured that her close associate and friend, Barrister Zainab Koko, cooked and delivered meals thrice daily to Haj Maitalle.

”When she was discharged from the hospital after 10 days, she was taken to her home town of Koko, where she has been under the care of the resident medical officer, Dr. Kola, who reviews her condition and ensures she gets physiotherapy, in addition to being in constant touch with the Consultant in Birnin Kebbi, Dr. Abubakar Dakingari.

”The Kebbi State Government has also approved N4million for her and her attendant doctor to travel to Dubai for further treatment, but she has been too weak to travel.

”Since Haj Maitalle returned to her home in Koko, the Governor, the First Lady and Sen. Aliero have been in touch with her. The First Lady has personally visited her three times, the Governor and Sen. Aliero once each, and the House of Representatives member from her constituency over four times.

”We have gone to this great length to provide full details of Haj. Maitalle’s condition in order to give Nigerians the correct information about her situation. We do not know what informed the wicked, irresponsible and downright deceitful story that the delightful woman has been abandoned even after she gave her life earnings in support of Buhari’s presidential campaign. The story of Haj. Maitalle’s purported abandonment is a figment of the imagination of the fellow who wrote it,” APC said.

Enugu Government has moved to check the proliferation of baby factories in the state.

16:46:00 Unknown 0

The Enugu State Government has moved to check the proliferation of baby factories in the state by setting up a committee on child adoption.

Over the years, several baby factories, where young mothers give birth and, most often, sell their babies, have been discovered in the state, as well as other parts of the South East.

The Committee on Child Adoption, which is to address all prevalent illegalities in child fostering and adoption, is headed by the Archbishop of the Enugu Anglican Province and Bishop of Enugu, Most Reverend Emmanuel Chukwuma.

Inuagurating the committee at the Government House, Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, warned that his administration would not fold its hands to watch rules and laws on child adoption abused in the state.

Ugwuanyi expressed regrets that, despite existing laws and the best efforts of government and other concerned agencies, cases of illegal child adoption and fostering have continued to rise.

He described the prevailing situation, where children are often abandoned, or sold as commodities, as unacceptable.

According to him, the establishment and operation of illegal child adoption facilities was a major cause for concern.

Ugwuanyi admitted that prevailing child adoption practices were not in line with constitutional provisions.

“While we acknowledge the right and the necessity for the childless, or benevolent couples to adopt motherless children and orphans, we believe that there is need for strict compliance with due process and the provisions of relevant laws to guarantee the security and well being of the affected children.

PDP:I Foresee a new Party Emerge.

13:12:00 Unknown 0

Sen. Lekan Balogun, a PDP stalwart and Osi Olubadan of Ibadan, has predicted that a new party would emerge from the PDP ahead of the 2019 general elections. Balogun disclosed this on Thursday during the monthly Guest Forum of Oodua Newspapers held at Ijikodo, Ibadan.

“I foresee a new party emerging out of the fall of PDP from power after the 2015 elections when the ruling All Progressives Congress took over.

“Some members of the party have gotten to a point of no return and I think they could break away,” he said.

The PDP, which came to power in 1999, ruled the country for 16 years. Balogun said that the party failed in its re-election bid because its leadership refused to listen to the advice of elders. The former lawmaker, who took a cursory look at the collapse of the PDP in Oyo State, warned APC not to make the same mistake.

“The fall of PDP in Oyo State and at the federal level is dialetic.“ Former President Goodluck Jonathan was good, but some of his ministers and party men did not help matters,” he said. Balogun, who claimed to have sent several text messages to PDP leaders in Abuja advising them without any response, said he predicted what happened to the party.

He said that the extent of the damage to the party’s fortunes was more obvious after the elections.

Balogun also said Nigerians should be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari over allegations of lopsided appointments. “Appointments are made based on principles of intellect, character and national spread.

“ President Buhari is a very disciplined leader and I know he would address the issue in subsequent appointments,” he said. He, however, called on the National Assembly and the executive to work together to promote good governance.

On creation of Ibadan State, Balogun said this was desirable but negated by the prevailing paucity of funds.

He said: “Take Oyo State for instance where government cannot pay workers and teachers salaries. “ Would any sane person be talking of creation of Ibadan State again?” He also said the late Premier, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was noted for his Free Education Programme, wondering why Gov. Abiola.

Ajimobi’s administration would stop payment of SSCE fees and also impose N3,000 education development levy.

Balogun also expressed reservations at the failure of the state government to conduct local government elections after four years. He said this was not only against the tenets of democracy, but contradicted the principle of rule of law.

One Naira Can Never Be Equal With One Dollar Said Dan Nwanyanwu.

11:54:00 Unknown 0

The pioneer Chairman of the Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, says Nigerians should face the reality that President Muhammadu Buhari will not meet many of his campaign promises including his pledge to make the naira and dollar to be at par.

Nwanyanwu said rather than deny that Buhari never made 100-day promises, the APC-led Federal Government should swing into action and start governing Nigeria instead of only probing the past administration. He said, “The APC and its presidential candidate made a lot of promises during the campaigns.

Nwanyanwu, who said he is no longer involved in partisan politics, stated this during a chat on Channels Television on Wednesday.

The former labour leader said there was no way the All Progressives Congress would be able to give N5,000 to unemployed youths across the country as promised.

We knew that some of these promises were not realisable. For example, there is no way one naira will be equal to one dollar. I know that without being an economist. There is no way anyone will be paid N5,000 every month. That is also not possible.

“But let us put all those campaign promises aside. We know our country. And we know where we are. And that is why I said that the APC as a political party should realise that the campaigns are over. They should stop defending the indefensible as regards whether they made certain promises or not. You do not learn how to write with your left hand at an old age.

“We have passed that stage, a President has been elected, let us encourage him and be patient with him and then look at the other areas he has to kick-start rather than probing every day. Yes, we are eager to get our stolen money back but at the same time, we want the government to start. What are you doing about unemployment and power?”

A suspected suicide bomber trying to blow up the Yankari motor park in Bauchi,

16:12:00 Unknown 0

According to a security source who confirmed the arrest to The Cable, the man was trying to gain admittance into the park when the explosives on him were spotted by metal detectors fixed to the entrance. A suspected suicide bomber seeking to blow up the Yankari motor park in Bauchi, Bauchi state, has been apprehended. “The man came very early in the morning, around 6am, and was trying to enter. But he was unable to achieve his aim,” the source said.

“Security at the gate detected the bomb, and they caught him.The suspect, described as “a grown man”, was handed over to the police. Most of the parks now have metal detectors since Boko Haram has been targeting crowds of people that can usually be found at parks.” The man must consider himself lucky to have been turned in to the police, as a suspected woman bomber arrested in similar circumstance in March was set ablaze. A mob at the Muda Lawal market was infuriated by the woman’s refusal to submit herself for a search, and therefore concluded that she was a Boko Haram member on a sinister mission.

The mob descended on her, beat her to a pulp, sprinkled petrol on a tyre, and hung it over her head before setting her on fire. In late 2014, two suspected female suicide bombers were also stoned to death at a market in Maiduguri, Borno state.

752 House Loans and N144m Vehicle has Been Released to Teachers in Ekiti State.

15:40:00 Unknown 0

Ekiti State Government has disbursed about N144m as vehicle and housing loans to 712 teaching and non-teaching staff in the state’s teaching service.

The Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Chief Toyin Ojo, who made this known in Ado Ekiti, said N63m of the sum was disbursed as car loans to 257 teaching and non-teaching staff, based on their grade levels.

The Ministry of Information said the vehicle loans ranged from N250,000 to N1m for teachers on grade level 7 to 16; while junior non-teaching staff from grade level 1 to 6 received N70,000 each.

Ojo added that the balance of N81m of the amount was disbursed as first and second tranches of staff housing loans to 455 teaching and non-teaching staff.

Ojo noted that last month, Governor Ayo Fayose approved the disbursement of N119m as car loans to 623 workers in the public service, despite the prevailing paucity of fund in the state.

He said the gesture would reduce the burden of obtaining bank loans, with the attendant high interest rates.

He charged the teachers to reciprocate government’s intervention by discharging their duties conscientiously

EFCC Plan to begin full investigation on former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Alison-Madueke Diezani

The
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has commenced a full
investigation into the activities of the immediate past Minister of
Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, and the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation.
It was learnt that the committee was led by a Superintendent of Police, who was seconded to the commission.

It can be recalled that an ongoing probe of the immediate-past administration by President Muhammadu Buhari is already in progress to beam its searchlight on the alleged purchase of three mobile stages, costing $6.9m, by former President Goodluck Jonathan and two of his officials.

Investigations revealed that the other three members of the committee
were pioneer civilian operatives of the commission with high capacity
for investigation.
According to a document, which was obtained from the Presidency on
Saturday, the deal, which is now a subject of investigation, was
allegedly carried out by Jonathan; his Chief Security Officer, Mr.
Gordon Obuah; and Alison-Madueke.

The fund was said to have been withdrawn from one of the numerous accounts of the NNPC.

The $6.9m (about N1.37bn) was said to have been withdrawn for the
purpose of buying three pieces of 40-feet mobile stages for use by
Jonathan during the campaign.

Besides the latest allegation, it will be recalled that a group,
Crusader for Good Governance, had petitioned the EFCC accusing the
former minister of squandering million of dollars of public funds to
charter private jets.

The petitioners also accused her of spending $300,000 on an average international trip.

The group also alleged that the NNPC, a government agency she oversaw,
maintained a Challenger 850 Visa jet which serves the former minister’s
needs as well as those of her family. The cost of running the jet is
$500,000 per month.

She was also accused of going to a meeting of the Oil Producing and Exporting Countries in Austria in a private jet.

It was gathered on Sunday that the committee set up by the EFCC had
since commenced probing the NNPC accounts and activities of the former
minister.

A top operative of the EFCC, said, “I think the commission has
commenced investigation into this Diezani issue. It is not just about
inviting her, the commission has set up a four-man team of crack
detectives to investigate her operations in the NNPC.

“The terms of reference of the committee include to look into all the
NNPC accounts which were under the supervision of Mrs. Alison-Madueke.

“The committee has since commenced work; they are still working. I think
a very senior police officer, a Police Superintendent, is leading the
other operatives in the probe of Diezani and multiple accounts of the
NNPC.” The source said.

When our correspondent contacted the Head of Media and Publicity of the
EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on the activities of the EFCC Special
Committee on the NNPC, the calls to his mobile telephone line did not
connect.

But Uwujaren had earlier said that he was not aware if the commission
had commenced a probe into the allegation that $6.9m was spent on
campaign stages.

Uwujaren said that he had not been briefed on any such investigation.

“I am not aware of such a probe; I have not been briefed on such a probe,” he said.

Meanwhile, Obuah has denied the allegation of purchase of three mobile
stages, costing $6.9m, for public appearance of the then President.

Obuah, who spoke through his lawyer, Mr. Andrew Tsekiri, in a telephone
conversation with one of our correspondents on Sunday, said the
allegation was false and challenged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led
Federal Government to produce evidence instead of putting him on trial
in the media.

Tsekiri said his client had been confronted with the allegation while in
the detention of the Department of State Services, which he said
investigated it and found it to be untrue.

The lawyer said, “Let me tell you, nothing like that exists. Obuah did
not make demand for that money for any stage. Let them show to Nigerians
evidence that he took the money. When Obuah was in their (DSS)
detention, they investigated this particular matter and found out that
it was false.

“He was confronted with the allegation. Mr. Obuah told them that he knew
nothing about it, and they found that the allegation was false. They
released him, why are they bringing it up again?”

He said since the release of the former President’s CSO from the DSS
detention in July, he had not been contacted over the allegation by any
government agency since then.

He said, “They have investigated the allegation and they found out it
was false, since then no government agency had contacted or invited Mr.
Obuah.

“They should show how Diezani authorised the payment of the money and
how it left Citibank to Zenith Bank, to Access Bank to Sterling Bank and
they should show how it ended in Obuah’s account.”

Tsekiri said the outcome of the allegation would soon show that the
Buhari Administration was not interested in governance but to frame up
allegations against people.

“They are just lying against Diezani and Mr. Jonathan. That is what they
are doing. Let me tell you what they want to do. They will charge Obuah
to court, make all the noise about the allegation that has been
published, knowing full well that the matter will not be decided in
about a year or two, and by then, the public would have forgotten about
it but they would have spoilt your name.”

The DSS revealed this following the arrest of about 20 suspected Boko
Haram commanders in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Plateau and Gombe states.
According to the the Department of State Services (DSS) we now have Boko Haram members spread across Lagos state.
The DSS in a statement by an official, Tony Opuiyo, on Sunday in Abuja, said those arrested were notable commanders and frontline members of the notorious group from different parts of the country.
The suspects, who were arrested between July 8 and August 25, 2015,
include the masterminds of the suicide attacks in Potiskum, Kano, Zaria,
and Jos.
The statement noted that the group’s new pattern of movement and spread
was caused by the pressure being put on it by security forces in its
core areas of strength in the North-East.

The service listed those arrested in Lagos to include Bakura Modu who was apprehended on July, 20 at Kara, Ogun State; Mustapha Jamberi, who was picked up on July 24 at Gowon Estate.

Others are Abuyi Sheriff, who was nabbed at Ebute-Meta; Babagana Ali and Babagana Koloye, who were arrested on August, 7 at Eric Moore, Surulere.

The service explained that it picked up Abba Sagma at Ijora Badia on August 9; Grema Abubakar and Tijani Bagudu were apprehended at Amukoko, Ijora Badia the next day, while Baba Alhaji and Abass Ibrahim were arrested earlier on the same day at the Alaba International Market, Ojo.

The DSS stated that a Boko Haram commander, Usman Shuaibu, aka
Money, revealed that he coordinated the suicide attacks in Potiskum,
Kano, Zaria and Jos, which claimed several lives, with N500,000 that was
provided by his Amir, one Isa Ali, who had a direct access to the sect
leader, Abubakar Shekau, from whom he collected money to fund operations
undertaken by their Markaz.

The agency said, “Shuaibu also revealed that he had participated in
several Boko Haram attacks, including the attacks at Gwoza Divisional
Police Station in 2014.

“Nigerians and indeed the general public have to note that the arrest of Shuaibu, aka Money, and the core members of his cell, stemmed the spate of bombings by the extremist sect. It will be recalled that Money and his group were arrested on their way to Bauchi State where they had planned to execute another bomb attack, and this was frustrated by the arrest.

“He admitted to being the leader of the team of nine sect members that
was dispatched from Sambisa Forest to carry out the attacks. He
disclosed that four out of the nine of them were used as suicide bombers
in executing all the (suicide) attacks.
“The sudden influx of Boko Haram members into Lagos State points is due
to the determination of the sect to extend its nefarious terrorist
activities to the state and in fact, to other parts of the country.

“The arrest of these confessed terrorists has, however, helped in no
small measure to avert devastating attacks in the area. However, the
service is making efforts to conclude its investigations and commence
prosecution of the suspects.”

The DSS said a Boko Haram Improvised Explosive Device expert, Ahmed
Mohammed, aka Abubakar), admitted to making the IEDs used in the various
suicide bombings in the country.

“Mohammed also averred that he was the one who strapped the suicide
bombers, notably Sule and his wives, with IED vests, which they used in
the attacks in Jos,” the service said.

The secret service further stated that Adamu Abdulahi, aka Babpa,
confessed that Shuaibu motivated him to work closely with IED expert,
Mohammed, in the preparation of the IEDs used in the attacks under
reference.

The service said that another suspect, Ibrahim Issa, confessed that he
was the one who carried out reconnaissance on the targets in Jos ahead
of the attacks, while Muttaqa Yusuf (aka Mohammed Sani/Mudtaka),
disclosed that one Aliyu believed to be Aliyu Gombe in Sambisa forest,
was the one that ordered the serial attacks which the syndicate carried
out.

He further confessed that he assisted Shuaibu in planning and executing the said attacks.

Other suspects include Ibrahim Audu, who was arrested on August 19 at
New Artisan Market, Enugu; Ibrahim Haruna, arrested on August, 21 at
Kwomi village, Kwami Local Government Area, Gombe State; Ali Mohammodu,
nabbed on August 22 at Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Fagga LGA in Kano State; and
Adam Jilbe, who was apprehended on August 23 at Obanikoro, Lagos State.
Meanwhile, the DSS has stepped up covert operations to dismantle Boko Haram cells across the country, particularly in the South-West, South-East and South-South where suspected terrorists are hiding.
The agency restated its determination to work with other stakeholders in
the fight against terror and other forms of criminality in the country
and called on citizens to volunteer useful information to the service
and other security agencies.
It was learnt that the arrest of notable Boko Haram commanders had
provided credible leads and intelligence that could assist the service
to track down insurgents and their supporters, including ‘sleeper
cells.’

A source said, “The recent arrest of terror suspects has provided a haul
of information and intelligence that could assist the service to
dismantle various terrorist cells. If the security forces can sustain
the current momentum, we will destroy Boko Haram; it is a matter of
time.”
Two security experts, Richard Amuwa and Dr. Ona Ekhomu, have urged
vigilance and a more friendly relationship between security agents and
residents to tackle threats of Boko Haram, especially in Lagos.

They said vigilance was the only way to recognise terrorists, adding
that a friendly relationship would encourage the people to be free to
report suspicious objects or persons in their neighbourhood.

Ekhomu, who is the President of the Association of Industrial Security
and Safety Operators of Nigeria, advised Lagosians to imbibe the culture
of TAPIs ─ Terrorists Attacks Pre-incident Indicators ─ to avoid
unnecessary deaths and tragedy.

He said, “Boko Haram members have been with us for a while; so one thing
we can do is to be vigilant against the influx of strangers into
neighbourhoods. Landlords associations should register okada
(motorcycle) riders and keke NAPEP (tricycle) drivers. Give them vests
so that any stranger would be picked up.

“Also, ask questions if anyone moves suspiciously in your area. Look out
for one another. Everybody must be their brothers’ keepers.”

Ekhomu said the ammunition of war of Boko Haram members was usually the IEDs.

“So, if you see anyone collecting cans; or anyone with bags of
fertiliser; or anyone with container of diesel when they don’t have a
generator, be suspicious. These are ingredients for IEDs. Boko Haram
don’t have easy access to high explosives,” the security expert added.

He also urged Lagosians not to be confrontational if someone looked
suspicious. He added that the suspect might be armed and could kill to
save himself.

Ekhomu said, “Contact the authority immediately. You can also contact
the media to ensure accountability by the security agencies.”

He said, “The people should not hesitate to raise the alarm if they see any strange face in their environment.

Also, Amuwa said the police should be ready to work with the people without creating fear in them.
“People should think less about their problems, and be more conscious of happenings within their environment.”

Amuwa, who is the Managing Director of the Mega Guards Services Limited,
also advised the government to ban the wearing of hijab for the time
being, saying the veil worn by muslim women, was being used by
terrorists to shield explosives.

He said, “The problem is that how do you detect a Boko Haram member? If
you are wearing shirts and the terrorist is wearing hijab, how do you
figure him or her out? That is why we have asked the government to stop
the wearing of hijab for now.”

In a related development sources told our correspondent that the
security agencies had been paying attention to some area in Lagos to
prevent attacks.

The areas include FESTAC, Apapa, Agege, Yaba, Ojuelegba, Obalende,
Ajegunle, Alimosho, Badagry, Lagos Island, Idi araba, Bariga, Bajulaiye,
Fola Agoro, Onipanu, Palmgroove, Aguda, Agbado, Ejigbo and Ikorodu,
among others.

Adesina said the President was aware of federal character and expressed the believe that there would be balance by the time he made more appointments in September.

Adesina spoke while featuring on a radio programme, Political Platform, on RayPower 100.5FM, monitored by our correspondent. While saying appointments were Buhari’s prerogative, the presidential spokesman also said nobody can fault the fact that those named so far ‎were appointed on merits. He also said it would not be fair for the President to be blamed for positions that were filled as a result of elections, like those of the National Assembly and appointments made as a result of next in command, like those of the acting Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission and that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. He assured all stakeholders that the President would keep to his promise of appointing the remaining aides and ministers ‎in September. Adesina said, “Nobody can fault the fact that the persons appointed were appointed on merits. “By the time more appointments are made, it will balance out. The President is trying to get the very best of Nigerians. The issue of key positions and no key positions should not be the issue.
“In terms of the spread, the President has prerogative to appoint and he knows there is federal character. I am sure that there will be balance in the future. These are still early days. At the end of the day, we will have a balance. “He gave a deadline of September for the appointment of ministers ‎and he will keep to it.”

Speaking earlier while administering the oath of office on the Commissioners, Gov. Bindow Jubrilla said that their appointment was based on merit.
“For this reason, I shall be donating my salary and allowances for use in enhancing the delivery of healthcare service in the state,’’ Fatima said.’’ He urged them to join hands with him in bringing the desired change in the state, adding that their loyalty should be to the people, and not him. “Your loyalty is to the people of Adamawa, whom you represent, and not to me”, Jibrilla said. Responding on behalf of the commissioners, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Kaletapwa Farauta, thanked the governor for the appointment, assuring that they would not betray the confidence reposed in them.
