"We need to aggressively seek ways to enjoy
the fruits of Chinese economic growth if it is difficult to directly
make inroads into Chinese domestic markets," Park said in a meeting with
members of an advisory committee on economic affairs.President Park Geun-hye said Wednesday that South Korea should seek
ways to buy stakes in or carry out merger and acquisition deals of
Chinese companies.
She also
said South Korea should change its economic structure to better cope
with challenges caused by economic changes in China.China is
pushing to boost domestic consumption in a major transition for the
world's second-largest economy that has long relied on exports and
investment for economic growth.South Korea and China signed a free trade agreement
in June, though the deal has yet to be ratified by the Seoul and Beijing
legislatures."In a long-term perspective, we should change
our economic structure in a way that can effectively respond to changes
in China.""We should make efforts to
expand our overseas markets through a free trade agreement with China,"
Park said in a meeting with members of an advisory committee on economic
affairs.China is South Korea's largest trading partner
with two-way trade volume reaching US$235 billion in 2014. Millions of
people travel between the two countries annually.Park also
said South Korea should explore strategies to stay ahead of Chinese
competition while pursuing measures conducive for mutual economic
growth, noting China "still presents various opportunities" to South
Korea. On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund lowered
South Korea's economic growth outlook for 2015 to 2.7 percent from an
earlier 3.1 percent, citing slumping exports and weak domestic
consumption. In its latest World Economic Outlook report, the
Washington-based organization said the downgrade stems from the
weakening of economic activity sparked by negative growth in exports and
anemic consumption.
South Korea's exports account for about half of its gross domestic product."There are still many mountains to cross for a new economic takeoff,"
Park said, referring to internal and external challenges facing South
Korea.Park voiced confidence South Korea can turn crisis into
opportunity, citing the "Saemaeul Movement," or new community movement,
which served as a springboard for South Korea's leap forward. The initiative -- launched by Park's father, then-President Park
Chung-hee in the 1970s -- is credited with helping modernize the
then-rural South Korean economy.

They accused the carmaker and dealers of deceiving its
customers and demanded that the contracts they made to buy the cars in
question be annulled. They sought 30 million won (US$25,000) each in damages in case the contracts are not canceled.A total of 38 people filed the lawsuit against Volkswagen Group, Audi
Volkswagen Korea and local dealers with the Seoul Central District
Court, said lawyer Jason Ha, who is representing the plaintiffs.Another group of Volkswagen vehicle owners in South Korea has sued
the German carmaker for deceiving them about emission tests following
the first case filed last week, their legal representative said Tuesday.Nearly 500 people sent documents to proceed with a legal action
against the carmaker since the first lawsuit was filed, he said. "The
number of plaintiffs could soon reach a hundred. We will file a suit
every week." In mid-September, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency said that Volkswagen used software that activates
emission controls only when the car is going through official testing to
fake test results and pass strict emission standards. The
world's No. 1 carmaker admitted to the accusation and decided to recall
about 500,000 vehicles in the U.S. alone. It also admitted that more
than 10 million cars sold globally might be equipped with the "defeat
device."Subject to investigation are Volkswagen's Golf, Jetta and Beetle and
the Audi A3, which were allowed to be imported after meeting Euro 6
standards.Volkswagen is expected to recall about 120,000
vehicles sold in South Korea in connection with the deepening diesel
emissions scandal. Authorities here launched their own investigation and tests on emissions and fuel efficiency of the car models in question."A recall does not erase the illegality it
has committed," Ha said. "We are also taking into consideration the
depreciation of the used cars in the market as the brand image has been
severely damaged."The next lawsuit will be lodged on Oct. 13.
The victims drowned in the flood while standing on planks constructed as bridge across a wide drainage channel, while others were trying to cross to the other side of the highway. The incident happened in the afternoon on Saturday, 5 September, 2015 after a heavy rainfall. At least 10 traders in Onitsha, Anambra State in eastern Nigeria, have died and many injured after they fell into a flooded drainage channel through which flood water flows into River Niger some kilometres away.

The incident happened during a heavy rainfall at popular Upper Iweka area of Onitsha city. He said over time, and unknown to the traders, the planks had been weakened due to pressure exerted on them by pedestrians. Ejike narrated that when the rain started on the fateful day, many of the traders stood on top of the planks with their goods while others were crossing to the other side.An eye witness, Emman Ejike, told our correspondent that the traders themselves used some planks to construct a makeshift bridge across the drainage channel to where they displayed their goods along the road to attract buyers, especially travellers who usually stopped at Upper Iweka. Suddenly, the planks broke and many of them fell into the wide drainage channel that was already flooded because of the rain that was falling and ten of the traders were swept away.

By the time the ten victims were rescued, they were already dead while others who were rescued alive but sustained injuries were taken to Ontisha General Hospital for treatment.

Residents have been reacting after the incident and blamed the incident on the government and the traders for converting the road to shops.

One of them, Luke Ikoku, said the government constructed the drainage channel and left it open, knowing full well that Upper Iweka is always busy because of presence of many motor parks there.
He explained that where there are motor parks, it was expected that hawkers will ply their trade there to solicit for customers, especially passengers and so the government should have made adequate plan for the area.

He advised that government should always have the interest of the people at heart while embarking in any public project.

Some of the traders who also spoke blamed the traders for disobeying the directives of the government.

James Ekelobi said that the government had warned them from using the place to sell their wares and government officials had chased the traders away several times, yet they always returned there to sell their goods.

He said it was not the government that placed the planks across the drainage channel but the traders.
When our correspondence visited Okpoko Police Division under whose jurisdiction the incident happened, the DPO was not around to comment on the matter.

However, police source confirmed the incident and said they have recovered the bodies and deposited them at the mortuary for autopsy report.
