The Governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr.
Habib Aruna, said the period of Independence must not be lost on anyone,
urging Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the pride and service of
the nation as exemplified by her founding fathers.Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday congratulated
Nigerians as the nation marks its 55th Independence Anniversary as a
sovereign state, saying patriotism and selfless service are two aspects
that can truly reflect the essence of the country’s Independence. The Governor said there was need to rekindle the flame that ignited
the determination of the founding fathers to fight for and obtain
independence and the pride they had in serving the country adding that
there was no better time than now to reawaken the waning glory of the
nation. He said the 2015 elections was a period that handed the nation a
lifeline to put her back on track and reclaim its waning glory as the
giant of Africa, urging all Nigerians irrespective of party affiliation,
religious belief or ethnic leaning to join hands with the government of
the day to salvage the nation.“You would recall that Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Alhaji
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, had on that memorable day, 55 years ago, in his
Independence Anniversary speech, admonished everyone to dedicate their
life and service to our country. This, for me is the springboard that
can take help us return to our glorious past that the likes of Pa
Anthony Enahoro, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Herbert
Macaulay and a host of others helped to build in their time”, he said.He also called on Nigerians to support the ongoing efforts by
President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to rebuild the nation’s
foundation, saying such efforts could not be left to the government
alone. He expressed optimism that the Buhari administration will succeed in
its quest to reduce the rate of poverty, fight corruption, change the
economic fortunes and stem the tide of insecurity in the country
especially in North East Nigeria, saying it would however require all
hands to be on deck.

Alaibe in a statement issued in the early hours of Wednesday said the
decision to withdraw from the contest was in the interest of the party
especially as it face the task of the common challenge of unseating the
PDP in the state come December 5 He said, “It is with all nostalgia that I recall the zeal, enthusiasm
and hope with which thousands of Bayelsans made a statement in the
direction of change in August, 2015. I can also vividly recall a mental
replay of the occasion wherein a qualitative representation of the
leadership of our great party, the All Progressives Congress ( APC)
ushered in respected leaders and members from their then party, Peoples
Democratic Party ( PDP) .Former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission NDCC,
Timi Alaibe has withdrawn from the primary of the All Progressives
Congress in Bayelsa State.“That singular event has been phenomenal just as its true meaning and
direction have all exuded confidence, unity of purpose, cohesion,
collectivism and courage. That day undoubtedly marked the beginning of a
people’s journey from hopelessness and squandry as enunciated by the
accidental PDP-led ‎government in Bayelsa state to that of quality
leadership that an APC government will represent.“As one of such leaders who took that historic decision, I thought of
giving a further bite to my burning desire to extricate the state from‎
abysmal leadership failure. Therefore, my aspiration to be governor
after series of consultations was to rekindle our collective hope and
lift the state beyond its current state of decay under the PDP.“Regardless, I am not oblivious of the fundamental fact that we all
need a virile, united, cohesive and collaborative APC to bring about our
desires to fruition. Not only do we need this, APC deserves every
sacrifice, including personal interests, to arrive at the envisaged
destination come February, 2016.“This is more so that both as individual leaders and as a party, the
need to avoid the a situation of crisis that the PDP might inadvertently
reap from cannot be over emphasised.“As a result, having carefully examined the circumstances that have
trailed the Governorship primaries of our great party in Bayelsa state, I
have come to the conclusion that pushing my governorship mbition
beyond this point carries alongside it some collateral consequences.“Succinctly, two options are available to me. Whereas I am confident
that I have the required support of my admirers and supporters‎ as well
as the needed backing of Bayelsans to govern them, the hurdles set on
the way of this noble project are seemingly temptous and capable of
overheating the APC in Bayelsa.“In another vein, the virtuous path to take is that virtuous one in
which personal interest are sacrificed for the common good, whether for
the APC or the state in general. This is the path I chose in the light
of the prevailing circumstances. I therefore withdraw from the
governorship primary contest.“This decision is taken in the interest of our party especially as we
face the task of the common challenge‎ of unseating the PDP in the
state come December 5.”

See Why Bayelsa Support Sylva.....

14:58:00 Unknown 0

The primary election has elicited much controversy as it is claimed that Sylva emerged winner through a ‘kangaroo’ arrangement. The election was said to be marred by violence which resulted in more
than 15 aspirants scampering for safety as well as members of the
election committee headed by the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole,
being held hostage in the arena. The Chairman, All Progressives Congress, Bayelsa State chapter, Chief
Tiwei Orunimighe, has said the party in the state stands by the victory
of former governor and leader of the party, Chief Timipre Sylva, at the
governorship primary. The Chairman, All Progressives Congress, Bayelsa State chapter, Chief
Tiwei Orunimighe, has said the party in the state stands by the victory
of former governor and leader of the party, Chief Timipre Sylva, at the
governorship primary.Oshiomhole has since claimed that Sylva’s thugs held him hostage in
an attempt to force him to conduct the primary in the midst of violence.
The Edo State Governor was said to be rescued by the combined forces
of the military and operatives of the Department of State Security on
the orders of the Chief of Defence Staff. But
Orunimighe, who insisted that the primary had been won and lost, said
the rumour of cancellation of the election was baseless and unfounded.“I want to believe that people who made statements from the national
secretariat did not have clearance with him. As a state chairman, I am
aware that the rumour of cancellation came even when we were on the
election ground. It was all over the social media. I think it was made
by one of their publicists. After that Odigie-Oyegun directed that
nobody should make any statement without obtaining clearance from him.He said, “As a chairman of Bayelsa APC, I am not aware of any
cancellation of the primary. With all due respect to the National
Chairman of our party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, he said nobody should
make an announcement except they cleared with him.“The national chairman is a man who knows his onions. Having set up
an election panel, he knows the next thing is to wait for the outcome or
report of the committee set up to administer the primary. Maybe they
will set up an appeal committee. We are expecting that by Monday or
Tuesday (today). So, I believe the cancellation rumour does not stand.“For now, election has been held and I think that is how it stands. Chief Timipre Sylva won the primary conducted last Tuesday.”
The chairman said he believed that some aspirants might might be
aggrieved, adding that the party was working towards harmonising their
grieviances ahead of the December 5 governorship poll.
He exonerated himself of being biased during the primary, stressing that in a contest of that nature, tongues were bound to wag.He stated, “I do not know who accused us. We are not biased. As a
chairman, I believe that I have managed the party to the best of my
ability. When it came to the period of voting, I was also a delegate.

US President Barack Obama spoke at the launch of the UN’s
new sustainable development goals (SDGs) on Sunday in a diplomatic meet
that has been overshadowed by conflicting Western and Russian approaches
to Syria’s civil war.Obama has warned
world leaders that they will not meet new UN anti-poverty targets
without tackling corruption and ending discrimination against women,
gays and other marginalised groups.“Development is threatened by bad
governance,” Obama said in a 28-minute speech in which he criticised
unequal societies and discrimination against women, gays, disabled
people, ethnic minorities and other groups. He spoke on the final day of a three-day
meeting on the SDGs – a blueprint of 17 targets to end poverty globally
and tackle other problems that each of the UN’s 193 members has agreed
to work towards, voluntarily, until 2030.“In the face of corruption that siphons
billions away from schools and hospitals and infrastructure into foreign
bank accounts, governments have to embrace transparency and open
government and rule of law,” he said.Advocates
say the goals are a noble effort to improve the planet. Critics say
they are too ambitious and, with an estimated annual price tag as high
as $5 trillion, too costly for a global economy that is still recovering
from the 2007-08 credit crunch.

Government’s action, which was aired severally on the airwaves of the
Imo Broadcasting Corporation, IBC, Owerri, also ordered the affected
officials to immediately handover to the most senior staff in their
respective establishments. No fewer than two permanent secretaries and about six substantive
directors (names withheld), serving in the Imo State civil service, have
been summarily suspended by Governor Rochas Okorocha, for alleged
fraudulent acts.Governor Okorocha equally warned heads of accounts and directors of
administration that they would henceforth, be held liable for any
maladministration or fraudulent acts in their respective establishments.Vanguard gathered that one of the affected officials, who allegedly
defrauded the state government to the tune of N45 million, may be handed
over to the anti-graft agency for interrogation and possible
prosecution.
A credible source in Government House, Owerri, disclosed that
Governor Okorocha has ordered that the dossier of all those who either
falsified their dates of birth or length of service, should be forwarded
to him for “proper disciplinary action”.It was also gathered that apart from being forced to proceed on
indefinite suspension without salary and pension, government appears
bent on getting them to refund every kobo they allegedly appropriated
illegally.Similarly, there are credible indications that more workers will face
the same music as government has focused its searchlight on the
activities of other suspected fraudsters in civil service garb.
The woman, named as a 19-year-old university student, was wounded at
the checkpoint near the centre of Hebron around 8.30am on Tuesday. The young Palestinian woman shot and wounded by Israeli troops after
she reportedly attempted to stab a soldier at a checkpoint in the
occupied West Bank has died, sources have told Al Jazeera. It later emerged that she was shot several times, including in the chest.“The attacker attempted to stab a soldier,” an Israeli army
spokeswoman said, explaining that the soldier then fired live ammunition
at her “lower extremities”.The soldier was not wounded. The army said the woman was transferred to a hospital in Israel after the incident. However, a video posted
by the news agency PalMedia shows the woman being left to bleed on the
ground after she was shot and then being roughly pulled out of the frame
of a camera.Speaking to Al Jazeera, Hebron resident Issa Amro identified the woman as 19-year-old Hadeel Salah al-Hashlamon.
“Now the soldiers have increased their numbers throughout the city,”
said Amro, who is the coordinator of the Hebron-based Youth Against
Settlements monitoring group.According to Amro, clashes broke out between Palestinian youth and
Israeli soldiers in the area following the shooting and “are still
ongoing across the city”.

adequately represented in Fayose’s appointments.Muslims in Ekiti yesterday
defied the directive of some of their leaders not to collect Sallah

in Ado Ekiti to collect the rams distributed by the governor for
Eid-el-Kabir celebration. While distributing the rams to Imams and other top dignitaries,
Fayose said he won’t allow himself to be dragged into playing politics

that action, describing those behind the attack as impostors, who were
not known in Islam circle. The governor urged Muslims to prevent themselves from being used as
instruments of politics by desperate politicians, who are bent on
maligning his government at every slight opportunity. In his words, “I won’t allow anybody to drag me into playing politics

with religious interest.
The Opposition party Will Not Stop....

The All Progressives Congress has advised the people of Osun State to brace up for austerity measures which became the only way out of the economic crisis the state is facing.

The Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, gave this advice in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Saturday while congratulating the labour unions and state government for finally resolving the salary impasse.

The APC attributed the economic crisis in the country to the alleged misrule of Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government.

He said, “This will take a lot of sacrifice and belt tightening to fix. Every citizen must be prepared to experience one form‎ of austerity or the other in the mean time, if we are to expeditiously overcome the damage done by the PDP to the nation’s economy. Something has to give way for better things to happen.

“It is not ‎ the government that will bear the brunt alone, the people should be prepared to share in making sacrifices, so that we can build a future for our children.”

The ruling party blamed the PDP for the criticisms which have trailed the inability of the state to pay its workers for many months, saying the opposition party orchestrated the attacks against the government to discredit it.

He said, “Of the number of states in the country where this same crisis persisted, it was only in Osun that a satanic twist was orchestrated by the PDP to magnify the sad event. This is because desperate politicians murderously seeking power will stop at nothing to exploit people’s misfortune for their selfish political ambition.”

But the opposition party has said they would not stop criticising the alleged maladministration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s administration.

The Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy of the PDP in Osun State, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, when contacted by our correspondent said the criticisms against Aregbesola was more severe than in other states because the governor was the only one involved in reckless spending with impunity. The PDP said the ruling party’s advice was a confirmation that Aregbesola was planning to retrench workers and to impose heavy taxes on the people.

He said, “Rather than prove us wrong, the APC has just corroborated our position that it has lost focus and can not bring smiles to the faces of the people but hardship.

“It is sad that a government that promised workers good welfare packages during campaign would withhold their salaries for nine months, and when given bailout by the FG, would fix it in a bank and embark on series of delay tactics to delay payment.

“APC in other South West states do not purchase helicopter for the pleasure of their governor like we have in Osun, neither do they travel to Cuba forthrightly like Aregbesola does. If Osun APC expects us to keep quiet in the face of oppression, embezzlement, fraud, maladministration and other vices, they got it wrong.”

At Last:Muhammadu Buhari approved the release of funds to anti-graft agencies.

14:50:00 Unknown 0

The Federal Government has discretely released some funds to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to boost their operational capacities in a bid to step up its anti-corruption war.

President Muhammadu Buhari who approved the release of the funds to the anti-graft agencies has ordered the re- opening of some corruption cases pending in the courts since 2007.

The funds, according to New Telegraph, were meant primarily to enable the two anti-agencies to carry out diligent prosecution of cases involving some state governors who have been indicted for corruption.

Buhari, upon assumption of office three months ago, had received briefings from the antigraft agencies where the heads of ICPC and EFCC blamed paucity of funds for the slow pace of their operations and inability to secure convictions on high profile cases.

A source at the EFCC told the newspaper that the President had then ordered the anti-graft agencies to set up a special committee to review the various cases that have either been hitherto declared closed or just lying fallow.

The anti-graft agencies have beamed the searchlight on many former governors, since the inception of the Buhari administration.

“I cannot tell you how much has been released but it is true that our capacity has been boosted. The committee is already working. It is the reason you have seen some actions from us in recent times. But we have not started massive invitation of these high-profile individuals because we want to build up very tight cases against them such that it would be difficult for them to escape,” the source told the national daily.

See How Gunmen Abducted The Special Adviser of Bayelsa State.

17:05:00 Unknown 0

Gunmen have abducted the Special Adviser to Bayelsa State Governor on Political Matters, Mr. Fyneman Wilson, in the state.

Wilson was abducted in the early hours of Wednesday in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.

The abductors were said to have gone to the residence of Wilson at Sagbama Town and abducted him with his Personal Assistant, identified simply as Fred, to an unknown destination.

They were said to have shot sporadically into the air to scare residents of the area before whisking them away.

The abducted top aide in Dickson’s government is a kinsman of the governor. Wilson’s abduction is coming barely a day after Dickson formally declared his intention to seek re-election on Tuesday. It was learnt that the Special Adviser was abducted around 4pm on Wednesday by five gunmen.

Reason for the abduction of Wilson and his PA have yet to be known, but government sources say the abduction was politically motivated. A ranking official of the government, who did not want his name mentioned, said the kidnap of the Governor’s aide had political undertones.

The official claimed that some people were getting jittery as the December 5 governorship election in the state drew nearer.

He said, “There is definitely more to this abduction.I can tell you without fear of contradiction that the kidnap of Wilson is politically motivated.

“With the governorship poll just a few months away, some people are getting really scared of the overwhelming support the governor is receiving on a daily basis from Bayelsans and outside.

They are facing the prospect of resounding defeat and will do anything, including kidnapping of key officials of this administration, to stave off that certain defeat.”

He called on the security agencies in the state to swing into action to ensure that Wilson was rescued without any harm.

Udu People gives DESOPADEC 7 days to address alleged marginalization.

17:10:00 Unknown 0

ANGRY youths of Udu , Udu Local Government Area in Delta State, have given the state government a seven-day ultimatum to address alleged marginalization of the area in the reconstitution of the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, or they would shut down oil wells in their location. They said the state government has not appointed any Udu indigene as commissioner or head of department in the oil commission since establishment, whereas Ughelli South and Uvwie in the same bloc have served on the board with Ughelli South re-appointed when Udu has not taken a bite. The union made the challenge in a letter dated September 1, to the Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, signed by the chairman, Comrade Sunday Subi.Their words, “We hereby issue a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to wade into this matter and reverse this ugly trend in the interest of equity, peace and justice. The hallmark of the present administration is prosperity for all Deltans and not prosperity for a section of the state.”

“In the face of the unprovoked marginalization of the Udu people in matters relating to DESOPADEC, we the Udu people, particularly the youths who, hitherto, have conducted ourselves in the most dignifying and law abiding manner have clearly realized that our simplicity is being mistaken for cowardice. We may have to pick up the gauntlet to prove to all and sundry that we are no fools, to rescue Udu from this wantonly wicked marginalization.”

They asserted, “We, therefore, use this medium to call on your good self to reverse this trend, otherwise, we the good people of Udu and indeed the youths shall resort to self help by shutting down all oil wells and installations in Udu as a first step to register our grievances.”

The group warned, “This may be our last communication with you and the government of Delta state on the above subject matter except our request is acceded to within the shortest possible time. We refuse to be second- class citizen in any guise, just as we reject the yoke of hewers of wood and fetchers of water for others in Delta state.”
