But the Senate President, Bukola Saraki,who announces correspondences

 of any other items in the day’s business, could not announce any letter
 from the President during <span data-term="goog_1444051812">Tuesday’s</span> session, indicating that there was no such list at his disposal.Muhammed Buhari failed to meet up with his earlier
promise of submitting list of nominees to the Senate before the end of
September. The president had assured that the list containing the
nominees into ministerial offices would be submitted to the Red Chamber
latest by September 30,for onward screening and possible confirmation.The development prompted the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP senators,
through the Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, to seek
clarification. Akpabio, PDP, Akwa Ibom North West, raised a point of
order, under matter of urgent importance, to find out why the Senate
President had not announced the president’s letter containing
ministerial nominees.As Saraki attempted to answer Akpabio’s question, Deputy Senate
Leader, Ibn Bala Na’Allah, APC, Kebbi South, raised another point of
order, where he explained that the day was still young, saying since the
 day’s session ends by <span data-term="goog_1444051813">12:30pm</span>,
 there was still the hope that the president would transmit the list of
ministerial nominees to the Upper Chamber before the close of the
session.Akpabio,who noted that the nation’s newspapers in the last couple of
weeks, have been awashed with stories of ministerial appointments by the
 president, asked the Senate President why he received the list from
President Buhari and was hiding it from his colleagues.He also said since the day ends by <span data-term="goog_1444051814">12 midnight</span>,
 there was still hope that the list could come before the time. But the
Senate President, who was thrown the question, could not provide answer,
 as he over-ruled Senator Akpabio, asking that the next item in the
day’s agenda be introduced.

Alaibe in a statement issued in the early hours of Wednesday said the
 decision to withdraw from the contest was in the interest of the party
especially as it face the task of the common challenge of unseating the
PDP in the state come December 5 He said, “It is with all nostalgia that I recall the zeal, enthusiasm
 and hope with which thousands of Bayelsans made a statement in the
direction of change in August, 2015. I can also vividly recall a mental
replay of the occasion wherein a qualitative representation of the
leadership of our great party, the All Progressives Congress ( APC)
ushered in respected leaders and members from their then party, Peoples
Democratic Party ( PDP) .Former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission NDCC,
Timi Alaibe has withdrawn from the primary of the All Progressives
Congress in Bayelsa State.“That singular event has been phenomenal just as its true meaning and
 direction have all exuded confidence, unity of purpose, cohesion,
collectivism and courage. That day undoubtedly marked the beginning of a
 people’s journey from hopelessness and squandry as enunciated by the
accidental PDP-led ‎government in Bayelsa state to that of quality
leadership that an APC government will represent.“As one of such leaders who took that historic decision, I thought of
 giving a further bite to my burning desire to extricate the state from‎
 abysmal leadership failure. Therefore, my aspiration to be governor
after series of consultations was to rekindle our collective hope and
lift the state beyond its current state of decay under the PDP.“Regardless, I am not oblivious of the fundamental fact that we all
need a virile, united, cohesive and collaborative APC to bring about our
 desires to fruition. Not only do we need this, APC deserves every
sacrifice, including personal interests, to arrive at the envisaged
destination come February, 2016.“This is more so that both as individual leaders and as a party, the
need to avoid the a situation of crisis that the PDP might inadvertently
 reap from cannot be over emphasised.“As a result, having carefully examined the circumstances that have
trailed the Governorship primaries of our great party in Bayelsa state, I
 have come to the conclusion that pushing my governorship mbition
beyond this point carries alongside it some collateral consequences.“Succinctly, two options are available to me. Whereas I am confident
that I have the required support of my admirers and supporters‎ as well
as the needed backing of Bayelsans to govern them, the hurdles set on
the way of this noble project are seemingly temptous and capable of
overheating the APC in Bayelsa.“In another vein, the virtuous path to take is that virtuous one in
which personal interest are sacrificed for the common good,whether for
the APC or the state in general. This is the path I chose in the light
of the prevailing circumstances. I therefore withdraw from the
governorship primary contest.“This decision is taken in the interest of our party especially as we
 face the task of the common challenge‎ of unseating the PDP in the
state come December 5.”

The Coalition of Northern Youths Association CNYA has stated that with
the the current crisis bedevilling the Senate President which culminated
 in his arraignment at the Code of Conduct Tribunal last week, he is no
longer morally fit to occupy the office if the president and should step
 down for a more qualified Senator to preside over the affairs of the
Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.The statement signed by the national coordinator of the group, Alhaji
 Abubakar Mohammed stated that the current crisis bedevilling the Senate
 President with his eventual arraignment at the Code of Conduct Tribunal
 last week has raised a moral issues about his fitness to preside.At the end of its meeting in Kaduna at the weekend, the group noted that it has
resolved to mobilise its members and senators to rally round Senator
Barnabas Gemade to become the next Senate President in view of the
corruption charges involving the Senate President, Senator Bukola
Saraki.According to the group “we strongly believe that Senator Saraki has
no moral right to preside over the affairs of the Senate based on the
allegations levelled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau, and he
cannot be facing trial and at the same time presiding over the affairs
of the Senate. As such the best option left for him now, if he has
conscience is to resign honourably and pave way for a new leadership in
the senate’.‘This is the only way out of the quagmire, considering the fact that
Senator Gemade has all it takes to superintend over the Senate’. The group pointed out that the whole world is watching Nigeria over
the Sarakigate, “hence we call on the Senate President to do the needful
 by resigning without delay”It added added that in order not to create a leadership vacuum in the
 Senate and allow the opposition party, the PDP to capitalise on this,
“we appeal to the previous contenders for the seat of Senate President
such as Senators Ahmed Lawan and George Akume to jettison their ambition
 and support Senator Barnabas Gemade to become the next Senate
President.Justifying it’s choice of Senator Gemade, the group said it believed
that Senator Gemade is going to entrench peace, unity and legislative
decorum in the senate.“We make bold to state that as a former minister, former Chairman of
the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and a two term Senator now in his third
 term, he has the capacity to steer the ship of the senate and forge
unity among the senators from both the All Progressive Congress APC and
the Peoples Democratic Party PDP”.‘We call on all APC Senators to throw away any toga of loyalty to any
 person and go for the best candidate which to us at this particular
point in time is Senator Barnabas Gemade’ the group said. They called on the National Executives of the All Progressive
Congress APC to see reason with their position and commence serious
consultations among party stakeholders to ensure that the exit of
Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President will not spell doom for the
party.<br />

The Opposition party Will Not Stop....

The All Progressives Congress has advised the people of Osun State to brace up for austerity measures which became the only way out of the economic crisis the state is facing.

The Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, gave this advice in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Saturday while congratulating the labour unions and state government for finally resolving the salary impasse.

The APC attributed the economic crisis in the country to the alleged misrule of Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government.

He said, “This will take a lot of sacrifice and belt tightening to fix. Every citizen must be prepared to experience one form‎ of austerity or the other in the mean time, if we are to expeditiously overcome the damage done by the PDP to the nation’s economy. Something has to give way for better things to happen.

“It is not ‎ the government that will bear the brunt alone, the people should be prepared to share in making sacrifices, so that we can build a future for our children.”

The ruling party blamed the PDP for the criticisms which have trailed the inability of the state to pay its workers for many months, saying the opposition party orchestrated the attacks against the government to discredit it.

He said, “Of the number of states in the country where this same crisis persisted, it was only in Osun that a satanic twist was orchestrated by the PDP to magnify the sad event. This is because desperate politicians murderously seeking power will stop at nothing to exploit people’s misfortune for their selfish political ambition.”

But the opposition party has said they would not stop criticising the alleged maladministration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s administration.

The Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy of the PDP in Osun State, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, when contacted by our correspondent said the criticisms against Aregbesola was more severe than in other states because the governor was the only one involved in reckless spending with impunity.The PDP said the ruling party’s advice was a confirmation that Aregbesola was planning to retrench workers and to impose heavy taxes on the people.

He said, “Rather than prove us wrong, the APC has just corroborated our position that it has lost focus and can not bring smiles to the faces of the people but hardship.

“It is sad that a government that promised workers good welfare packages during campaign would withhold their salaries for nine months, and when given bailout by the FG, would fix it in a bank and embark on series of delay tactics to delay payment.

“APC in other South West states do not purchase helicopter for the pleasure of their governor like we have in Osun, neither do they travel to Cuba forthrightly like Aregbesola does. If Osun APC expects us to keep quiet in the face of oppression, embezzlement, fraud, maladministration and other vices, they got it wrong.”

The party has also said it would never put Buhari’s portraits on its walls though it has removed that of the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who ruled on the platform of the PDP. “We will never hang his portrait in this office, because President Buhari is not known to our party.The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has refused to hang the official portrait of President Muhammadu Buhari at the party’s national secretariat.

Over 100 days after the President assumed office, the PDP has yet to hang his portrait at any of the offices in its Wadata House national secretariat, located at Zone 5, Abuja.He is not a leader of our party and therefore we will never put his portrait here. We are a political party, very partisan and therefore, we are not going to hide that,” National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday.

Jonathan was also the presidential candidate of the former ruling party during the last general election but he was defeated by Buhari, who was the presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress.

The defeat was the first to be suffered by the PDP since the return of democracy in 1999.

Before now, the party has always been hanging the portraits of all the Presidents at the party’s reception area as well as the National Executive Committee and National Working Committee halls within the secretariat.

Metuh said the APC also did not hang the portrait of Jonthan in its offices before the former President was defeated in the March 28 election.

“Can you find out if the APC had the portrait of former President Jonathan in their office before he was defeated? That is just it,” he told our correspondent.

When asked whether the party was taking its own pound of flesh, Metuh said no but that since Buhari “is not a member of our party, we won’t put his portrait here.”

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lai Mohammed, expressed shock at Metuh’s comment.

“This is ridiculous and we have no comment. Let Nigerians judge the PDP on this matter,” Mohammed said.

He said the PDP spokesman had a shallow understanding of the concept of opposition politics.

Meanwhile, work has stopped at the new secretariat of the PDP, located in the Central Business District, Abuja.

Investigations by our correspondent indicated that contractors handling the project were only doing skeletal jobs at the site.

When our correspondent visited the site on Tuesday, there was no visible job being done at the site.

It was gathered that the cost of the project was put at N11.5bn when it was awarded some years ago. At completion, the building is expected to have 12 floors, with two other floors serving as the car park.

The party had claimed that the project was being financed from levies and contributions from members.

When a fund-raising dinner was organised a few years ago, the party was able to realise about N5bn, and the project, which started more than four years ago, was to be delivered in 126 weeks.

The former National Chairman of the party, under whose leadership the project commenced, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, had then said that the complex, when completed, would strengthen the capacity of the PDP to discharge its role effectively in Africa.

The party had claimed on January 5, 2015 that it was going to spend part of the N21.8bn it realised from the party’s fund-raising on the party’s secretariat.

A former Minister for Information and the Chairman of the party’s Fund-raising Committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, had said the money donated to the PDP was not meant for the campaign of the defeated Jonathan alone.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri, has struck out the case filed by Chief Emeka Ihedioha, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, challenging the dismissal of his petition by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.<br />
<br />
 Ihedioha was challenging the declaration of Chief Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as governor of Imo State.

In his ruling yesterday, chairman of the Appeal Panel, Justice Jimmy Bada, said the case was dismissed on grounds of improper service of summons on the respondents, whose addresses were not properly listed.<br />
<br />
 But Ihedioha, in his reaction sent by his media assistant, Chibuike Onyeukwu, said he would approach the Supreme Court for redress.

Similarly, Okorocha, in a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, said the judgement had upheld justice and respected the popular and lawful actions of the people over who would govern them at any given time.

He also commended Ihedioha for exercising his rights, adding that the legal actions were designed “to strengthen our democracy.”

PDP:I Foresee a new Party Emerge.

13:12:00 Unknown 0

Sen. Lekan Balogun, a PDP stalwart and Osi Olubadan of Ibadan, has predicted that a new party would emerge from the PDP ahead of the 2019 general elections. Balogun disclosed this on Thursday during the monthly Guest Forum of Oodua Newspapers held at Ijikodo, Ibadan.<br />
<br />
“I foresee a new party emerging out of the fall of PDP from power after the 2015 elections when the ruling All Progressives Congress took over.

“Some members of the party have gotten to a point of no return and I think they could break away,” he said.<br />
<br />
The PDP, which came to power in 1999, ruled the country for 16 years. Balogun said that the party failed in its re-election bid because its leadership refused to listen to the advice of elders. The former lawmaker, who took a cursory look at the collapse of the PDP in Oyo State, warned APC not to make the same mistake.<br />
<br />
“The fall of PDP in Oyo State and at the federal level is dialetic.“ Former President Goodluck Jonathan was good, but some of his ministers and party men did not help matters,” he said. Balogun, who claimed to have sent several text messages to PDP leaders in Abuja advising them without any response, said he predicted what happened to the party.<br />
<br />
He said that the extent of the damage to the party’s fortunes was more obvious after the elections.

Balogun also said Nigerians should be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari over allegations of lopsided appointments. “Appointments are made based on principles of intellect, character and national spread.<br />
<br />
“ President Buhari is a very disciplined leader and I know he would address the issue in subsequent appointments,” he said. He, however, called on the National Assembly and the executive to work together to promote good governance.

On creation of Ibadan State, Balogun said this was desirable but negated by the prevailing paucity of funds.<br />
<br />
He said: “Take Oyo State for instance where government cannot pay workers and teachers salaries. “ Would any sane person be talking of creation of Ibadan State again?” He also said the late Premier, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was noted for his Free Education Programme, wondering why Gov. Abiola.

Ajimobi’s administration would stop payment of SSCE fees and also impose N3,000 education development levy.<br />
<br />
Balogun also expressed reservations at the failure of the state government to conduct local government elections after four years. He said this was not only against the tenets of democracy, but contradicted the principle of rule of law.
