The All Progressives Congress has advised the people of Osun State to brace up for austerity measures which became the only way out of the economic crisis the state is facing. The Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, gave this advice in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Saturday while congratulating the labour unions and state government for finally resolving the salary impasse. The APC attributed the economic crisis in the country to the alleged misrule of Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government. He said, “This will take a lot of sacrifice and belt tightening to fix. Every citizen must be prepared to experience one form‎ of austerity or the other in the mean time, if we are to expeditiously overcome the damage done by the PDP to the nation’s economy. Something has to give way for better things to happen. “It is not ‎ the government that will bear the brunt alone, the people should be prepared to share in making sacrifices, so that we can build a future for our children.” The ruling party blamed the PDP for the criticisms which have trailed the inability of the state to pay its workers for many months, saying the opposition party orchestrated the attacks against the government to discredit it. He said, “Of the number of states in the country where this same crisis persisted, it was only in Osun that a satanic twist was orchestrated by the PDP to magnify the sad event. This is because desperate politicians murderously seeking power will stop at nothing to exploit people’s misfortune for their selfish political ambition.” But the opposition party has said they would not stop criticising the alleged maladministration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s administration. The Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy of the PDP in Osun State, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, when contacted by our correspondent said the criticisms against Aregbesola was more severe than in other states because the governor was the only one involved in reckless spending with impunity.The PDP said the ruling party’s advice was a confirmation that Aregbesola was planning to retrench workers and to impose heavy taxes on the people. He said, “Rather than prove us wrong, the APC has just corroborated our position that it has lost focus and can not bring smiles to the faces of the people but hardship. “It is sad that a government that promised workers good welfare packages during campaign would withhold their salaries for nine months, and when given bailout by the FG, would fix it in a bank and embark on series of delay tactics to delay payment. “APC in other South West states do not purchase helicopter for the pleasure of their governor like we have in Osun, neither do they travel to Cuba forthrightly like Aregbesola does. If Osun APC expects us to keep quiet in the face of oppression, embezzlement, fraud, maladministration and other vices, they got it wrong.”

Secondary School Students in Osun State Protest Against......

Secondary school students in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Tuesday staged a protest against the government policy that any student who cannot produce their parents’ tax clearance should not be allowed in school. Students of Osogbo High School trooped out in hundreds and trekked from their school, through Ogo Oluwa area to the Governor’s Office singing anti-government songs. Armed with leaves, the students were joined on the roads to the Governor’s Office by their colleagues in other schools. The Head Boy of Osogbo High School 1, Taiwo Oyewole, said the students were protesting because most of their parents who were government workers had not been paid for months, adding that it was impossible for them (parents) to pay N4,500 for tax clearance.He said there was a directive from the state government that any student who could not produce the clearance should not be allowed in school. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Lawrence Oyeniran, when contacted said the directive was given by a body at the Internal Revenue. Oyeniran said, ” Internal revenue gave the directive, but it is a collective decision. The lecturers, who had been on strike for the past three months were led by leaders of the body including Chairman, Lasisi Jimoh; Secretary Olusegun Lana and Public Relations Officer, Dotun Omisore. The lecturers, who were armed with placards with various inscriptions, were chanting, ‘Save our Souls’, ‘Enough is Enough’, ‘Pay our Salaries’ and ‘We Reject Half Salaries’, sang anti-government songs. They also rejected the plan of the state government to pay half salaries while saying they would not submit themselves to fresh screening directed by the government. The irate lecturers said the plan of the state government to pay workers half salaries was shocking because the state had received its share of the bailout fund from the Central Bank of Nigeria. The letter was signed by the CASUOSTI Chairman, Lasisi Jimoh; secerayry, Olusegun Lana; Chairman Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Iree, Dotun Omisore; ASUP chairman, Esa Oke, Adesola Akande; COEASU Ila-Orangun Chairman, Segun Onifade and COEASU Ilesa Chairman, Oladele Ojo. The Chief Whip of the House of Assembly, Mr. Folorunsho Bamisayemi, while addressing the protesters appealed to them to exercise patience, saying efforts were underway to ensure their demands were met. However, the Speaker, Mr. Najeem Salam, after after spending some minutes with the protesters walked out on them. The Secretary of the council, who spoke with our correspondent, said lecturers had been on strike for the past months without government seeking to negotiate with them. Lana said, “We came to the House of Assembly to submit Save Our Souls letter. The protest went well until the Speaker walked out on us. ” The state government has not been remitting pension deductions from our salaries to our Pension Fund Administrators, this is against the law. The deductions are supposed to be remitted seven days after salaries are paid but this is not happening.” Lana also stated that the institutions were understaffed and the few lecturers were overburdened despite not being paid for many months.

Robbers Took Over Ife- Ilesa Expressway - Luxurious Bus Drivers Protest

Drivers of luxurious buses early Monday morning blocked the Ife- Ilesa Expressway to protest the robbery incident which they said happened on the road over night. It was not clear if any life was lost in the accident, but it was gathered that the drivers said the robbers took over the road since last night until early Monday morning.<br /> <br />  One of the motorists trapped in the traffic congestion caused by the blockage of the road, Sanya, revealed that the protest started around 4am on Monday. Sanya said the protesting drivers said robbery cases were frequent on the road and vowed not to leave the road until the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, came to address them.<br /> <br />  He said the policemen who arrived at the scene to restore order were chased away by the irate drivers, who demanded to see the commissioner of police. Sanya said, ” We are close to 1000 vehicles trapped in the traffic snarl now. I have been here for over two hours and there is no exit road to take. We are stuck in the mess.<br /> <br />  “Many newspapers delivery vans are here before dawn and there is no way anybody can escape except the road is cleared.” Another motorist, Peter Dada, also told our correspondent that the blockage of the road had frustrated road users caught in the web of the protest. He called on security agents to increase their presence on the road to prevent robbery cases.<br /> <br />  The new Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Kola Sodipo, when contacted on the telephone by our correspondent said he had sent his men to the scene. Sodipo said, ” I have sent my men there. I learnt that the robbery didn’t happen this morning but it has happened before.”
